Dr. Don Walker is a trainer at Yoshi’s Dog School, and studying dog behavioral work in an apprenticeship with Roger Therriault. Don is currently studying and has completed more than 300 hours of one on one training in the “natural method” of dog training, developed by Roger.
After having a lifetime love affair with dogs, and a lengthy career in the healthcare field, Don has pursued how to train dogs under the tutelage of master dog trainer and behaviorist Roger Therriault. “In many ways, working with dogs requires many of the same talents as being a good healer. “Whether a good healer, behaviorist or trainer, you have to pay close attention, focusing on the unique and specific needs of your client.” “You have to be both scientifically specific, at the same time being artistic and empathetic. Behavior work and dog training requires a very well rounded person.
The ability to quickly react to the needs and signals a dog brings to a session takes a lot of skill. “Reading” the dog, and giving him (or her) exactly the right communication, at exactly the right moment is paramount. This leads to clear and understandable communication and a situation in which dogs can learn very quickly. This leads to a happy relationship for learning, and for just spending quality times with your best friend, you dog.
It’s amazing how fast dogs can learn using these principles! The dogs love it. They quickly learn what is wanted, and then are happy to give it. It builds a beautiful relationship between the dog and his owner, based on respect, love and fairness. We use these principles to teach the important commands. This leads to way more than just an “obedient” dog. These commands are the heel, sit, down, stay, come, come and sit from a distance, down from a distance, and “emergency down.” These commands are expected both on and off leash. When this style of communication is exchanged, it leads to trust, happiness, and reliability. Our dog now knows what is wanted, and not wanted. It shapes the bond and relationship to an enjoyable one! Not just one where he does as he’s told, when he’s told to.
